The first of the ?pillars? of Din is Iman or Faith.
Iman or Faith is necessary in six matters which are generally spoken of as the ?six articles of Faith.? They are enunciated in the following sentence;-

?The Body of Iman is Zikr, i.e. Remembrance of Allah or Invocation. And Salat. i.e. Prayer.
?What nourishes Iman is Zakat, i.e. the poor rate, which is Tax on the Rich to help the Poor, and Sadaqa, i.e. Charity.
?The Soul of the Iman is Conviction.
?The light of Iman is Cleanliness.
?The friend of Iman is acquisition of Knowledge.
?The Rule of Iman is the Desire for Allah?s Mercy, and the Fear of Allah?s Wrath and Punishment.
?The throne of Iman is Fasting.
Types of Iman
There are five types of Iman. They are:
1.Iman exiting itself, pure and simple. This is the Iman of Angels.
2.Iman that is protected. This is the Iman of the Prophets.
3.Iman that is acceptable. This is the Iman of Muslims.
4.Iman that is not stable. This is the Iman of the seventy-two sects that have gone astray.
5.Iman that is easily brushed off. This is the Iman of the hypocrites or Munafiqs.
Difference between Iman and Amal
Iman, i.e. Faith, and Amal, i.e. Good deeds, are closely connected but there are many differences between them. 12 differences are given below.
1.Amal is the beginning of Iman
2.Iman is a Continuous state, but Amal is an act of the moment.
3.Iman is obligatory on all Humanity but Amal, which is the doing of good according to the commands of Allah, is obligatory on Muslims only.
4.All the wise rules of Islam pertain to, or are closely linked to Iman.
5.It is Iman that makes Amal acceptable, for Amal (good deeds) are of no value if they are done without Iman or Faith.
6.Iman brings one closer to Paradise, but not Amal without Iman.
7.Rewad is not for Iman but Reward is for Amal.
8.Iman will not be weighed or measured but Amal or all one?s good actions will be weighed.
9.Injunctions are not in relation to Iman but all injunctions and commandments relate to Amal.
10.One who has no Iman becomes a Kafir or Unbeliever, but not one who has no Amal.
11.It is through Iman that Prophets have been protected by Allah.
12.Iman cannot become excessive nor can it fall short, but if Amal is increased then a Mu?min can become perfect (Kamil), if the Amal of a Mu?min decrease then he becomes a Naqis, i.e. a defective person.
