Hi,
I am an Irish student, for my college dissertation I am studying the way the media portray a negative image of the Muslim community. Does anybody watch tv or read papers and think that a false impression of Muslims has been given. I'm really interested in feedback whether negative or postive.
Thanks

There has been a portrayal of Islam and Muslims in the Western media. I dont know whether it is done intentionally either because I dont believe in conspiracy theories; however there is definately lack of knowledge and understanding of Muslims. But Muslims themselves must combat the terrorists who are Muslim, in order to change that image. Right now I'd say most of the West believe all Muslims are terrorists and are willing to blow up women and children, to instill fear. Those images don't help, any more than Christian extremists who show up at military funerals and protest, desecrating their holy resting places. Unless Muslims take control and reign in their own terrorists groups, this image will not change anytime soon. It is just a statement of fact, not my beliefs. I prefer loving one another, not fighting.

something interesting seems to keep happening in canadian media.. that is everytime muslims make the news in the world, this one group of canadian muslims (who essentially see islam as their culture and not their religion) keep being placed up front and center. the canadian media seems to be trying somehow to understand the muslim community, but unfortunately, the ones willing to come forward and speak their minds are also not those most of us would consider proper muslims, let alone authorities with the education to represent the muslim community as a whole appropriately. they've been responsible for stating things such as "muslims support gay marriage" and "the reason for muslim terrorists in the west is that the muslim youth are not allowed to date"... it's very disturbing that people like this actually exist, let alone that they'd get so much air time when so few 'average canadians' really have any clue about islam and are truly depending on the media to educate them about the world around them, including their muslim neighbours. they keep going to this extreme trying to show how muslims are just like the rest of canadians by telling blatant lies to somehow fit in with the rest of society. it's really horrible. this country has a catholic majority and the church has just been pounded away at for being openly "homophobic". the church is continuously criticized as being groundless because of how much it's given into peer pressure, and yet the one group of people who should really have stood by their sides on the gay issue (muslims) have instead ended up with a bunch of pro-gay nuts claiming on tv that muslims support gay marriage hoping it will gain some brownie points among the free-spirited, "open minded" canadian public. i think overall the canadian media has tried its best to be fair to muslims. they even went to the uk and showed the hypocrisy of anti-muslim movements there... but unfortunately, it's the 'muslims' in this country that cause the bad press.

Well i guess you already knows the answer. What media are you referring to? TElevision? Print media? Do a little bit of research and find out who are the major shareholders in those companies. Basically media companies are big businesses, wif the sole intention of making good returns for their shareholders. In the media industry, the way to achieve that is by giving whatever the public wants to read.

Without a doubt that there has been false portrayal of Islam and Muslims in the Western media. The "labeling" has been the most damaging, and the Western media is constantly failing to correctly name the factors that they are talking about.
There is also a double standard. Muslim blows himself up - he is not just terrorist - he is "Islamic terrorist" in the Western media.
When Serbs destroy thousadns and thousands mosques, and libraries in Bosnia - western media did not portray them as Christian extremist, but in fact they (W.media) came up with the new phrase "ethnic cleansing" and intentionally made the public believe that religion did not play a big factor in Serb brutality.

It also needs to be pointed out that Muslims have also done enough of fair share of horrible acts to give us all bad image. And, unfortunately, some of the poster "bad boys" are idols in some parts of the Muslim world. It would be foolish to deny it.

This picture below is the photo of Serbian military troops in early 1990s in Bosnia desrying the mosque and preparing to burn the flag.

I dont see no picture what is this sensored for we live in democracy right!
