i disagree with brother citizen that a man can divorce a women when ever he wants..a man must have a valid reason for divorce, same as a women...she can only divorce on abuse and psychological grounds which can raise alot of factors.
as for the wife staying at the husbands house this is not neccessry, she can if she wants be seperated from him.
a man can stop divorce proceedings after the first or the second talaq.
the first talaq he can go back to the wife with both of their consent, but with the second talaq he has to have two witnesses present (SURAH AL BAQARAH V.229) but on the third talaq he cannot go back to her, after the third divorce he can consider himself divorced from his wife after she has completed the iddat (waiting period) which is three months.(Surah AL TALAQ V1)
howver if both parties feel that they want to be together within the year of all this happening, they can do so only with iman and two witness present.
A husband may divorce his wife whenever he wants. If the marriage has been consummated, the divorced woman must remain at her ex-husband's house for three months before she is allowed to leave. The man has the ability to retract the divorce by having sex with the woman within those three months.
A woman who wishes to be divorced needs the consent of her husband. If he consents she does not have to pay back the dowry.
Under certain circumstances (abuse, for instance), the wife may ask a judge to separate the couple.
If a man divorces his wife three times, he can no longer marry her again unless she marries another man and then divorces him.
These are guidelines; Islamic law on divorce is different depending on the school of thought...
