    Asalamu Alaikum!
Up until a couple years ago, I had no clue as to Islam having different sects. I guess you can say that i was living under a rock, or maybe it was just ignorance on my part,,,but i have been trying to figure out the difference in beliefs between the Sunni and Shia'. Being Sunni, I know that i follow the Sunnah of al rasul (PBUH). Does that mean that Shia' does not? I have been asking about the difference in beliefs but I keep getting mixed answers, nothing really clear, so i think im asking the wrong people. If someone out there can answer my question id greatly appreciate it. Thank You and God Bless.

The Shia sect emerged after the Denise of the Prophet(saw), around the 'election' of the third caliph (May Allah(swt) be pleased with them).shia means follower- these were followers of Hadhrat Ali(ra) which split into two groups a) the Shia who were the true lovers of the ahlul bayt and of the same Sunni beliefs b) those who went to the extremes against the ahle sunnah in support of Ali(ra) to the extent defamed and attacked the sahaba(ra) and the ijma(majority verdict etc) of the ummah through lying, distorting Islamic sources etc ( hadhrat Umar(ra) burning down hadhrat Fatima(ra)'s house). This sect was formed by ibn Sabah ( a Jew who called conversion to create division within islam. The ahlul bayt (inc Ali) themselves refuted these Shia ( even proven from Shia sources).
Today Shia are of the second category ( the true Shia were Sunni but emphasised the love of the ahlul bayt in order to please Allah(swt)) As can be seen their literature. There is many fatwas of kufr on certain Shias cos of their beliefs. This is brief, above two are Shia origins. This second category of Shia are the combined beliefs of the various stray sects within shiasm That have been moulded into one Shia sect of today.

salam ,i am a muslim revert was sunni for 3 years then looked into the shia beliefs there is no going back for me ,the shia love the Ahulbayt so much and there are so many lovely stories and hadiths about Hasan and Hussain the prophets grandsons also Fatima is mentioned and praised by our prophet(pbuh)the so called lovely Abaker tried to burn down fatimas house when she was in it ,all this seems to be hidden from the sunnis our prophet said whoever angers fatima angers me .i think all muslims have a duty to look into the shia books you will be amazed ,as for hitting oneself no shia scholar that i have spoke to agrees with this act .

    salaam brother jani
i am a muslim and try to follow our beloved prophet pbuh and his companions whom ALLAH was pleased with.
and i accept when you utter the kalima,
that you are my brother in islam ,
after that you are free to practice the deen any way you like ,as there is no compulsion in deen ,but would like you to afford me and others like me the same respect(those who adore the sahaba)
i would also appreciate you furnish me with the reference in the quraan where ALLAH mentions shia

may ALLAH guide us all and protect us from the accursed shaitan, for it is he that do not want us united

Islam will break into 73 firqoh / groups / sects, and only one will reach heaven which is Rasululloh SAW and his companions are step on it and they called as salafus shalih. So you don't compare about sunni or shia or khawarij or jahmiyah or ikhwanul muslimin or etc, but you just follow Rasululloh SAW because that is the way all moslem have to do, learn more of Qur'an and Sunnah / Shahihul Hadits than you will understand about what you should follow. Rasululloh SAW and his companions and tabi'in and tabiuth tabi'in are the best generation of this moslem ummah.

    as-salama alkum
brothers and sisters i have one question to ask. do the sh'ai people believe that ali was the prophet or what?

"Our Lord! Send amongst them a Messenger of their own (and indeed All?h answered their invocation by sending Muhammad Peace be upon him ), who shall recite unto them Your Verses and instruct them in the Book (this Qur'?n) and Al-hikmah (full knowledge of the Isl?mic laws and jurisprudence or wisdom or Prophethood, etc.), and sanctify them. Verily! You are the All-Mighty, the All-Wise." (Al-Baqarah 2:129)

Allah tells us plainly that He revealed the Qur'an and the Hikmah. The two go hand-in-hand. So one can't understand the Qur'an without the Sunnah of an nabi SAWS.

    Assalamu allaykum wa rahmatuloh..
i dont wonna argue about anything...but one thing i can say that most Shia's curse Abu Bakr, Umar and accuse A'isha..and this is quite enough to say that those who do that are misguided .....because not ones Muhammad SAWS told that they are in Jannah and he mentioned many times that Abu Bakr is the most beloved to him among men, and he said in the hadeeth when a woman asked him (rasululoh saws) he (rasululoh saws) told her to come later and if she doesnt find him go to Abu Bakr that means he would be the next after the prohpet pbuh....and there are pretty enough evidences that these sahaba's statuses were before Ali's , because Shia's dont admit this....and finally when Ali was a halifa he himself said that Abu Bakr is much higher in status than him and everyone knew about this...and this was Abu Bakr who stood on the pulpit when Muhammad saws passed away and talked and reminded that Muhammad saws is just a prohpet and all prophets die.....but Allah doesnt die and never will....others were not able to admit the fact...its very easy to proof that those who curse these people are misguided ...and Allah knows best

    To Sister Amira:
I have spent so much time reading
our friends here "sniping" at each other,
everybody claims he's right ( absolutely
and not partially, for God's sake,
either Black or White, there is no place for Grey!). Thus I'd like to
come from adifferent approach, since your question was clear: what's the difference between Shis and Sunnni.
-My academic answer, definig each group-no Bias, I promise You, is just like
the differense of groups and sects in other religins:
Sunni and Shia divisions are the 2 Major
divisions in Islam, under which lie smaller divisions which are called sects.
1- Sunni division are the majority of
muslims today. They believe that the Islamic teachings are derived from the Quran and Sunnah ( the teachings and narrations of the Prophet) and after that they follow teachings from the Companions of the prophet, and they believe that the Caliphate after the prophet should be by election(consultation), that's in brief.
The major Sunni sects are 4, following
their 4 Imams ( leaders of school of thoughts): Hanafi, Maliki, Shafii and
Hanbali. There is more school of thoughts after that: Salafi for example,
are called Salafi because they follow the Good old generation, and are divided -today- into regular Salafi(using only Word to spread their ideology), and there is the Salaf-Jihadi
that use Jihad to spread their Word.
Also there is the Sufism ( Naqshabandi and others), who are only stiking to worship and meditation and shy away
from regular lif, just concentraing on
spirituality ( like meditation in Christianity).
2- Shiism, or Shia beleive that Imam
Ali is the appointed imam after the prophet, they support their claims by narration from the prohet that he assigned Ali as the succcessor.
The Shia sects are the 12'ers, following 12-imams, from the family of the prophet, they say the prophet assigned them, whose Last is the Imam Mahdi that will appear at the end of Times with Jesus Christ), Ismaili/Bohra, Zaidi..etc

Well said i cannot agree with you anymore!

As the Quran hasnt changed nor will it be why would there be anything after Sunni...
Some people out there just dont have common sense.
If a fammly person was in jail being convisted ofr a crime, natuarlly another fammilyy memeber would do what ever it took to free them even if they had to lie about it...
In saying this its pretty obvious why alla Suppana wata alla wanted Abu Bakr to be the successor instead of Ali,As ali was related to our Muhummad PBPH.
YES we all will unite but for those who wish to be called are the ones trully far away from the truth....

Aslam Alakum. First, I think it is very important to know what the word sunna means. In the Quran sunna means God's system. The debate on sunna vs shia is all man made, just politics that go back hundreds of years.
